The Art of Adaptation and Building Resilience

Recently I was researching on the wonderful concepts of Bio Mimicry. What especially caught my attention is the practice of learning from nature and then emulating what we find.

In my garden I have big fruit bearing trees like the jackfruit and mango and several small garden plants that grace the house. About nine months back based on the incessant complaints extended by my “friendly neighbor” the branches of the jackfruit tree overlooking the neighbor’s house had to be cut. It was so very sad to see those magnificent branches brought down. It felt like some limb of ours was forcefully brought down.

Lo and behold came the welcome rains and the caring shown, the tree sprouted fresh small branches with wonderful shiny green leaves extending all around them. To add to this small jackfruits have started emerging promising to be a good crop turnout in the next few months. Today as I was pouring water all around the tree I could sense the wonderful tilting of the leaves in the branches as if to indicate the wonderful feel that was being exhibited by the tree in some form of salutation.

This wonderful exposition brought in a few areas of learning in the coaching space.

  1. When one faces a lot of hurdles and hardships in life how does one bounce back with a lot of resilience. Like the branches of the tree being cut off how did the tree cope and get in new branches and leaves to regain itself. Lesson to be learnt is in how to work on adversaries and look at alternatives in moving on in life. The coach can work within self and also on evoking new awareness in the client and facilitate clients to embrace new growth patterns?
  2. How to embrace change? Especially like the tree adapting to new weather changes and seeking water requirements.  What can we do to adapt to new challenges as and when we are caught in it. What do we see around us and how do we use resources to overcome them? Using effective coaching presence in facilitating client’s journey is yet learning.
  3. Just as the tree regained its past glory of standing proud lessons to be learnt is to see how to reposition ourselves to any adversity that may hit us at any point in time.

The tree with all the branches seen now totally cut off earlier from the tree. Today in all its glory.

The tree in all its glorious height. The tree is 70 years old.
