A young, jovial boy — the kind everyone loved to be around — known for his humor, warmth, and infectious positivity. Life, however, had other plans.

At eighteen, when most are dreaming about the future, he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

The word malignant echoed louder than anything else in the room. He wept — not out of fear for himself, but at the sight of his loved ones lost and helpless.

Then something shifted.

After the shock settled, he looked at them and said, “Be strong.” He prepared — mentally, emotionally, physically — for the battle ahead. Surgery. Radiation. Chemotherapy. Endless MRIs. Pain beyond vocabulary.

He walked into the warzone and walked out victorious. Life did not stop testing him.

In 2019, five seizures struck without warning. One episode left him conscious, yet unaware — shouting, punching, fighting those trying to protect him. The diagnosis: epilepsy. Strong medications followed, bringing mood swings, irritability, and exhaustion.

Just as he adjusted to that reality, 2020 delivered another blow — Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss in both ears.

Silence replaced sound. Over time, his left ear regained some strength. The right did not. Hearing aids became companions — helpful in quiet spaces, overwhelmed in noisy ones. He learned to inform others gently, to ask instead of assume, to replace embarrassment with awareness.

Surely, this was the last lesson?

Fall 2021 answered differently.

A hard fall. Head striking the floor. Loss of consciousness. Catheters navigating delicate pathways. A Dye redirecting blood and a glue to ensure that the blood doesn’t flow in that space. Medication-induced hallucinations.

And a revelation: He asked the question only the resilient dare to ask: He fought again. Harder. Stronger. Wiser.

Recovery was slow. Dark days came. But he refused to surrender to them. He chose faith over fear, movement over stagnation, meaning over misery.

Today, he stands healthy. Physically active. Writing poetry. Riding bikes. Raising pets. Practicing mindfulness. Walking a spiritual path. Moving steadily toward his Ikigai — his reason for being.

Had he not welcomed pain, adversity, and uncertainty as temporary visitors, he would not have become who he is now.

Not just a survivor.

But a man forged by fire.

An embracer in adversity. A thriver in the dark. A conqueror in silence who discovered that sometimes, life doesn’t break you —

by Rahul Srinivasan A young, jovial boy — the kind everyone loved to be around — known for his humor, warmth, and infectious positivity. His family stood stunned, their minds frozen in disbelief.

In that moment, the boy became a warrior.

Battered, yes — but unbroken.
He rose from Victim to Victor.

An injection in each ear, daily. Medication that caused piercing brain-freeze-like pain.

Diagnosis: Dural AV Fistula — reverse blood flow in the brain. Veins circulating pressure instead of releasing it.

The fistula had been the cause of the seizures all along. Not epilepsy.

What is this trying to teach me? Is the pain worth the gain?

it builds you.
